The TMJ society of Canada and GTA support group was started by me after a very difficult journey to diagnosis and treatment. I realized that I could not allow any Canadian to go through this alone. Furthermore, someone had to think about how to lobby with insurance companies and government agencies as to change misconceptions about TMJ.
Additionally, public awareness of this condition has to change. It is much more than a cracking noise in the jaw. The pain can be excruciating. I know.
As for health care professionals it is the wild west out there when it comes to TMJ. I, like many other sufferers, have gone from doctor to doctor to dentist to physiotherapists to finally get diagnosed. Many people are misdiagnosed with sinus issues. At one point an ENT offered me nose spray for my sinus problem and wrote to my GP about the pain on the left side of my face and left ear –when the pain was on the other side. I am only lucky that another ENT sent me to a maxo-facial surgeon- and finally a diagnosis.
As for treatment, Lots of people offer answers. The thought today is to do the most minimally invasive treatments (please see the links for articles.)
I have had TMJ for a year but before that a mysterious toothache for 3 years what couldn’t be attributed to a source-may have been TMJ. As well, my constant neck and shoulder pain –going on for years may also have been part of the thing.
Last summer I had to stay home from work for 5 weeks. I was in pain. I am better now but far from perfect and have bad and good days. I am here to talk via email any time you wish. If you would like to set up a support group outside of the GTA, I can also offer some insights. Please contact me email@example.com
As a result I have started TMJSC. I am paying for the website on my own as we are not a registered Canadian charity. Perhaps we will be one day and then can other help with the cost of dental splints and other therapies. For now if you wish to help me underwrite the cost of the website by sending $1-$5-it would be appreciated. A PayPal donation site link is on the “About Us” section.
